What Is Spirituality?

spirituality

A person’s deep feelings and beliefs related to life’s purpose, connection to others and beliefs about the meaning of life. Spirituality is a way of living that emphasizes self-actualization, personal growth and fulfillment.

It is a quality that goes beyond religion and strives for inspiration, reverence, awe and meaning, even in those who do not believe in God or a higher power (Murray and Zentner 1989:259). It comes into focus in times of emotional stress, physical (and mental) illness, loss, bereavement or death, and seeks answers to questions about the universe.

Being spiritual can help you cope with life’s challenges, such as stress and depression, and restore hope and optimism. It may also make you more aware of your own emotions and give you more empathy for others.

People who practice spirituality often spend time meditating or thinking about what matters to them. They also spend more time enjoying small, everyday activities and savoring the simple pleasures in life.

This is because spiritual people are more conscious of their own feelings and values, and they use this awareness to help them become better people. They have compassion for others, and it can influence their everyday behaviors to avoid unhealthy or disrespectful behavior.

They also feel a sense of responsibility towards themselves and the nature. This is because spirituality involves human connection with others and the natural world.

People who practice spirituality are often more disciplined, respect parents and teachers, believe in a higher power, and are dedicated to their studies and jobs. They are also more likely to volunteer for charitable organizations or serve in social roles.
